Major Contributions to Supplement Safety and Sport Drug Testing

• Pioneering Leadership: BSCG Co-Founder Dr. Don Catlin established the first sport drug-testing laboratory in the U.S. at UCLA in 1982. For 25 years, he managed drug testing programs for the IOC, USOC, USADA, MLB, NFL, NCAA, U.S. military, and multiple Olympic Games and FIFA World Cups.
• Groundbreaking Research: In 2000, Dr. Catlin’s team published a seminal study in JAMA which was the first time trace contamination in dietary supplements had been noted as a concern for athletes.
• Industry Impact: Collaborated with the Washington Post in 2005 to expose Methasterone (Superdrol) in supplements, leading to FDA enforcement actions including the 2009 raid on Bodybuilding.com.
• Public Health Advocacy: First to spotlight the dangerous designer stimulant Methylhexaneamine as an ingredient in dietary supplements, in a Washington Post article in 2006, leading to the ultimate removal of this compound from supplement products.
• Government Collaboration: Provided analytical and legal consulting as part of a government action to identify and expose designer drugs like 6-OXO and ‘Tren’ in supplements.
• Regulatory Enforcement: Led efforts to eliminate DEA Class III Controlled Substances from online retailers including Amazon.
• Innovative Testing Methods: Developed key techniques to detect the first designer steroids Norbolethone, THG, and Madol and other methods to detect synthetic testosterone (via Carbon Isotope Ratio CIR), Darbepoietin, and equine Erythropoietic agents.
• Scientific Contributions: Dr. Catlin and colleagues authored over 125 publications in analytical chemistry, supplement safety, doping control, mass spectrometry, and toxicology.

The Next Generation - Expanding the Scope of Certification and Anti-Doping Science

• In 2018, President and Co-Founder Oliver Catlin expanded BSCG’s testing and certification to include drugs not banned in sport, enhancing consumer safety and regulatory compliance.
• Under his leadership, BSCG now offers industry-leading protection with testing for 400+ drugs on the WADA Prohibited List and 50+ additional drugs of concern relevant to consumer safety and retail security, including all those required by major retailers like Amazon.
• Following in the footsteps of Dr. Catlin, Oliver Catlin has co-authored five publications on anti-doping and nutrition, focusing on Russian and Eastern European drugs (e.g., Noopept, Mexidol, Cytoflavin, Hypoxen) and sports nutrition topics like succinic acid and derivatives.
• His priorities in research and advocacy have been on antihypoxant, anti-ischemic, nootropic, and anabolic substances that should be a focus for anti-doping and health authorities and in regulations of supplements and related products around the world.
